newbassoon composition prize

Applications are open for the 2026 NewBassoon Composition Prize, a (somewhat) annual competition dedicated to creating new repertoire for multiple bassoons.  This year’s prize will be the commission of a new work for bassoon quartet.

Awards

The winner will receive:

  • A $600 cash prize
  • Commission to write a new work for four bassoons or four bassoons and electronics, approximately 5-12 minutes in length, in a single movement or multiple movements
  • Premiere performance during the NewBassoon Institute at Appalachian State University, June 8-14, 2026
  • Performance recording by NewBassoon Faculty
  • Up to two Honorable mentions may also chosen to receive commissions, which will be premiered at the Institute.

 

The winner and honorable mentions will be announced by January 15, 2026.  Final pieces will be due April 15.

 
Entry Requirements
  • Scores and recordings for two representative pieces of any length, at least one of which has been written in the last 5 years  
  • At least one of the two submitted pieces must include wind(s) to demonstrate writing for a wind instrument or instruments
  • A short statement about the inspiration and rationale behind the quartet you intend to write (approximately 300 words)
